Boston Cream Pie Stuffed Hawaiian Rolls give you that familiar combination of creamy vanilla filling and rich chocolate topping, tucked inside soft, slightly sweet rolls. Instead of making dough from scratch or frying donuts, you start with Hawaiian rolls, which makes the whole dessert much more approachable.
For my version, I use a creamy vanilla pudding filling with vanilla bean paste for a little extra depth and those pretty vanilla flecks. The semisweet chocolate ganache gets just a touch of espresso powder, which makes the chocolate taste richer without turning these into coffee-flavored rolls.
This recipe yields 16 stuffed rolls, making it a good choice for parties, potlucks, or dessert with the family. There’s no need to turn on the oven, and the process is mostly assembly. Once the filling has had some time to chill, pipe it into the soft rolls and finish each one with a silky layer of chocolate.

What You’ll Need for These Stuffed Hawaiian Rolls
You only need a few ingredients for these Boston cream stuffed Hawaiian rolls, but two small touches make this version a little more special: vanilla bean paste in the filling and a hint of espresso in the ganache.
Hawaiian Rolls
Use 16 fresh Hawaiian rolls. Their soft, slightly sweet texture works especially well with the cool vanilla filling. Choose rolls that are intact and haven’t started drying out, since you’ll be making a pocket inside each one.
Creamy Vanilla Bean Filling
- Instant vanilla pudding mix: This creates a thick, stable filling that’s easy to pipe and won’t immediately run out of the rolls. You’ll need about two-thirds of a 3.4-ounce package.
- Cold whole milk: Whole milk gives the pudding a creamy consistency. Make sure it’s cold so the instant pudding sets properly.
- Vanilla bean paste: This is my little upgrade to the filling. It adds a fuller vanilla flavor along with those tiny vanilla bean flecks.
- Whipped cream: Folding prepared whipped cream into the pudding lightens the texture so the center feels creamy rather than heavy.
Espresso Chocolate Ganache
- Semisweet chocolate chips: Their slight bitterness balances the sweet Hawaiian rolls and vanilla filling.
- Heavy whipping cream: This creates a smooth, glossy ganache that stays soft enough to bite into.
- Instant espresso powder: You only need a small amount. It brings out the deeper notes in the chocolate without making the ganache taste noticeably like coffee. Use instant espresso powder that dissolves in liquid, not ground espresso beans.
How to Make Boston Cream Pie Stuffed Hawaiian Rolls
Prepare the Vanilla Bean Filling
- Whisk the instant vanilla pudding mix with the cold whole milk until smooth and beginning to thicken.
- Stir in the vanilla bean paste until the tiny vanilla flecks are evenly distributed throughout the pudding.
- Gently fold in the whipped cream until no streaks remain. Don’t whisk aggressively at this point—you want to keep some of that lighter texture.
- Cover and refrigerate the filling for about 30 minutes. It should be cold and thick enough to hold its shape when piped.
Prepare and Fill the Hawaiian Rolls
- Carefully separate the 16 Hawaiian rolls, keeping the sides as intact as possible.
- Insert the handle of a wooden spoon into the side of each roll. Gently move it around inside to form a pocket, taking care not to push through the bottom or opposite side.
- Transfer the chilled vanilla bean filling to a piping bag or sturdy zip-top bag with one corner snipped off.
- Pipe the filling into each roll until it reaches the opening and the roll feels full. Be careful not to add too much, as the bread may stretch or split.
Make the Espresso Chocolate Ganache
- Place the heavy whipping cream in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for about 1 minute, until hot and steaming but not boiling.
- Stir the instant espresso powder into the hot cream, mixing until it has completely dissolved.
- Add the semisweet chocolate chips and let everything stand undisturbed for 5 minutes.
- Stir slowly from the center outward until the chocolate and cream form a smooth, glossy ganache. If it’s too fluid to coat the rolls generously, let it stand for a few minutes to thicken.
Dip and Set the Rolls
- Dip the top of each filled roll into the espresso chocolate ganache.
- Lift each roll straight up, allowing any extra chocolate to drip back into the bowl.
- Place the finished rolls on a serving platter without stacking them.
- Let the ganache settle slightly before serving. If you’re not serving the rolls right away, keep them refrigerated.

Tips for the Best Results
- Start with fresh, soft rolls. Hawaiian rolls that have started to dry out can crack when you make the pocket. Fresh rolls are much easier to hollow without tearing.
- If the filling is difficult to pipe, chill it longer. Give it a little more time in the refrigerator rather than adding extra pudding mix.
- Use the wooden spoon gently. You only need enough room inside for the filling. Widen the pocket gradually rather than pushing hard, which can tear the bottom or sides.
- A piping bag makes filling easier. You can use a zip-top bag in a pinch, but I find a piping bag gives me better control.
- Give runny ganache a minute to thicken. You want it fluid enough to coat the roll but thick enough to leave a generous chocolate layer rather than immediately running down the sides.
Make Ahead and Storage
What You Can Make Ahead
You can make the vanilla filling up to 1 day in advance and store it covered in the refrigerator. When it’s time to assemble the rolls, gently stir the filling before spooning it into your piping bag.
For the best texture, I like to fill and dip the rolls shortly before serving. The creamy filling will gradually soften the bread, so if you’re preparing ahead, keep the components separate until you’re ready to assemble them.
How to Store Leftovers
Store leftover Boston cream stuffed Hawaiian rolls in a covered airtight container in the refrigerator because of the dairy-based filling. They’re best within 1 to 2 days, while the rolls are still pleasantly soft rather than overly moist.
Because the filling contains milk and cream, don’t leave the stuffed rolls at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Keep them refrigerated until you’re ready to serve.
The ganache will become firmer when chilled. You can serve the rolls cold, or let them sit at room temperature for about 10 to 15 minutes to take some of the chill off before eating.

Substitutions and Flavor Variations
Ingredient Substitutions
- Hawaiian rolls: Another soft, slightly sweet dinner roll can work if Hawaiian rolls aren’t available. Brioche-style rolls are another good option, although their richer texture and size may change how much filling each one holds.
- Semisweet chocolate: Dark chocolate works if you prefer a less-sweet topping. If it makes the ganache too thick for dipping, stir in warm heavy cream 1 teaspoon at a time until it loosens.
- Vanilla bean paste: If you don’t have it, use ½ teaspoon vanilla extract. You’ll lose the visible vanilla flecks, but the filling will still work.
Flavor Variations
- Orange vanilla: Omit the espresso powder and add a little finely grated orange zest to the vanilla filling for a light citrus note that pairs well with chocolate.
I wouldn’t change too many flavors at once. Part of what makes these rolls work is the simple combination of soft sweet bread, creamy vanilla filling, and chocolate on top.
If you’re in the mood for a richer chocolate-and-cream dessert, cheesecake and brownie cake is another one to try.
Boston Cream Pie Stuffed Hawaiian Rolls FAQs
Why did my vanilla filling turn out lumpy?
Lumps usually form when the pudding mix isn’t whisked evenly into the cold milk. Whisk the mixture thoroughly before folding in the whipped cream. If you still have a few small lumps, press the filling through a fine-mesh strainer before chilling it.
Can I make these without espresso powder?
Yes. The espresso powder only deepens the chocolate flavor, so you can leave it out without changing the ganache method.
Can I assemble the rolls the night before?
You can, but I prefer not to when texture matters. The filling continues to soak into the bread overnight, so the rolls will be softer the next day. For better results, make the filling ahead, refrigerate it separately, and assemble the rolls closer to serving.
Can I freeze Boston cream stuffed Hawaiian rolls?
I don’t recommend freezing the finished rolls. The creamy pudding filling can change texture after freezing and thawing, and the bread may become too moist. These are much better made fresh and refrigerated for short-term storage.

Boston Cream Pie Stuffed Hawaiian Rolls
Ingredients
Method
- Prepare the filling. Whisk the instant vanilla pudding mix and cold whole milk in a medium bowl until smooth and beginning to thicken.
- Add the vanilla. Stir in the vanilla bean paste, then gently fold in the whipped cream until evenly incorporated. Cover and refrigerate for about 30 minutes, or until cold and thick enough to pipe.
- Prepare the rolls. Carefully separate the Hawaiian rolls. Insert the handle of a wooden spoon into the side of each roll and gently move it around to create a pocket without piercing the other side or bottom.
- Fill the rolls. Transfer the chilled filling to a piping bag or sturdy zip-top bag. Pipe it into each roll until generously filled, stopping before the bread begins to stretch or split.
- Heat the cream. Place the heavy whipping cream in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for about 1 minute, until hot and steaming but not boiling.
- Make the espresso ganache. Stir the espresso powder into the hot cream until dissolved. Add the chocolate chips and let stand undisturbed for 5 minutes. Stir slowly until completely smooth and glossy.
- Dip the rolls. Dip the top of each filled roll into the ganache and let the excess drip back into the bowl.
- Set and serve. Arrange the rolls on a platter and allow the ganache to settle slightly before serving. Refrigerate if not serving immediately.
Notes
- Be sure to use instant vanilla pudding mix, not cook-and-serve pudding.
- You’ll need about two-thirds of a 3.4-ounce package of pudding mix to get the 2.3 ounces required for this 16-roll batch.
- Vanilla bean paste gives this version its more pronounced vanilla flavor, but ½ teaspoon vanilla extract can be substituted.
- The ¼ teaspoon espresso powder is intentionally subtle. It deepens the chocolate rather than making the ganache taste strongly of coffee.
- For the best texture, assemble the rolls close to serving time.
- Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for 1–2 days.
